Globetrotters star Meadowlark Lemon dies at age 83

He was known as the “clown prince of basketball,” and he reigned over basketball courts around the world.

Meadowlark Lemon was the star of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team for a quarter of a century, performing his famous moves before audiences that included Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev.

He played in 7,500 consecutive games – the equivalent of more than 92 NBA seasons, between 1955 and 1980.

But it wasn’t until 2003 that his athleticism was finally recognized, and he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

After leaving the Globetrotters, he started three comedy-basketball teams of his own over the years but none caught on like the original team.

He also appeared in television shows and movies, and started a foundation that worked with troubled youth, but it was here, as the star of center court that he was best known.

Meadowlark Lemon died Sunday at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was 83.
