Ahead of his worldwide ride before Christmas Day, Santa — or at least one thousand people who dressed like him – ran for charity in Athens.

Ringing bells and bellowing ho, ho, hos, the red-and-white-clad Santas ran two and a half kilometers – or one and a half miles – through the city.

SOUNDBITE: Marina Koutareli, Athens Santa Run organizer, saying (Greek):

“It is the most Christmas race that exists and we want to spread a message of optimism and joy from Athens to all the other capitals. This event takes place throughout the world and it is the second time that we have had the pleasure of hosting it in Athens.”

SOUNDBITE: Filimonas Vafeiadis, Athens Santa Run participant, saying (Greek):

“We are contributing to a good cause. We are a school, I am the teacher and I am here with my students, and we are very pleased to be here and take part in such an event.”

This is the second Athens Santa Run. The run raises money for the ELIZA children’s charity which aims to fight cruelty to children.
