Gujarat Violence: Curfew continues in Ahmedabad, Rajkot; lifted in Surat

Ahmedabad/ Rajkot/ Surat, Aug 27 (ANI): Curfew remained in place for the third day in Ahmedabad on Thursday after clashes between police and influential Patel clan, demanding quota in jobs and educational institutions, claimed seven lives. Residents asked the powerful clan, demanding reservation in job and education, to find a solution to the issue through dialogue with the government, even as curfew continued to hit normal life in parts of the state. The army was called and patrolled riot-hit areas of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat after the death toll rose to seven in two days of caste-related violence on Wednesday (August 26). Violence broke out following the arrest of Hardik Patel–the leader of Patidar community spearheading the campaign for reservation in government jobs and admission to government institutions under the OBC quota. Shops, schools, business establishment remained closed for the third day in Ahmedabad. Police teams were deployed at various points to avoid untoward incidents. However, life in Rajkot – another prominent city in the state – crawled back to normalcy. Meanwhile, in Surat curfew has been lifted.
