“We’ve got a good steady core of players who have played together for a good three or four years now and know each other very well on the pitch and off the pitch and the unity, the mentality and the team spirit has just grown year by year and you can go a very long way with that.”

“Our success at the moment is very much down to hard work, everyone’s working really, really hard in training. Only 11 players can play but it’s very important as a squad that the players not playing work hard in training and everyone’s doing that, everyone’s really on the same page so it’s great to be a part of.”

5. (SOUNDBITE) (English) LEICESTER CITY GOALKEEPER KASPER SCHMEICHEL, SPEAKING ABOUT RANIERI, SAYING:

“We were on a good run already, we had good momentum and he’s come in and he’s got different ideas about a few things but I think the most important thing and probably what he deserves the most credit for is that he hasn’t come in and tried to change everything. He’s recognised that things worked quite well and he’s let us get on with it. He’s kept the coaching staff from last season as well.”

STORY: Surprise Premier League leaders Leicester City’s success is built on hard work and team spirit, according to goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The Foxes, who finished 14th last season after promotion from the second division, guaranteed themselves the top spot going into Christmas after their impressive 3-2 win at Everton on Saturday.

Previously they beat defending champions Chelsea, a result which was the final nail in Jose Mourinho’s Stamford Bridge career.

Leicester have lost only one game in the league this season and on Monday afternoon were five points above second-placed Arsenal, who play Manchester City later, in a tight table.

Consistency is also an important element in the team’s success, according to the Danish ‘keeper who joined the midlanders in 2001 from Leeds United.

“We’ve got a good steady core of players who have played together for a good three or four years now and know each other very well on the pitch and off the pitch and the unity, the mentality and the team spirit has just grown year by year and you can go a very long way with that,” he said.

Schmeichel paid tribute to the club’s Italian manager Claudio Ranieri, who joined Leicester in July this year, having been in charge at Chelsea from 2000 to 2004 before being replaced by Mourinho.

At the London club Ranieri was nicknamed ‘The Tinkerman’ for his constant changes to the team and tactics but Leicester are seeing a different approach.

“He’s got different ideas about a few things but I think the most important thing and probably what he deserves the most credit for is that he hasn’t come in and tried to change everything.

“He’s recognised that things worked quite well and he’s let us get on with it. He’s kept the coaching staff from last season as well,” said Schmeichel, who was speaking on behalf of Precision Goalkeeping.

Leicester next visit ninth-placed Liverpool on Saturday (December 26).
