“He’s a guy, I think who can lead the side with the sort of attitude I want going forward. You know, we want to have an England side that’s got that uncompromising feel about it, and I’m really pleased that he’s taken up the job.”

“As a team, it’s a huge challenge ahead, but not looking past Scotland for two weeks and we’ve got a good chance to get really excited about that, and tuck in. We haven’t had a field session yet – fortunately we’ve got to do all this for the admen, can’t wait to get my boots on and get out there with all the lads.”

“From your guys point of view, it’s easy to say I might not have had an international future, but as a bloke that as a player, you go away, and whenever I’ve had problems in the past, you make goals again, you reset your targets. I always said to myself, I’d get back into an England shirt, and here I am. So, I’ve still got to get through two weeks of training, get up to Murrayfield, but yes, I always had faith I’d be back here.”

“The main thing I learned is that in a lot of cases, the limitations on the team is set by the people who coached them. That the players have the capacity to grow enormously, and when I look at the England team at the moment, they are the best players in England at the moment. There’s a lot of those players can be the best players in Europe. A lot of those players can potentially be the best players in the world, and our jobs as the coaching staff is to give them the opportunity to develop that, and that’s what we are going to do.”

STORY: Controversial hooker Dylan Hartley was named England’s new captain by coach Eddie Jones on Monday (January 25), replacing Chris Robshaw despite the Northampton firebrand having a long history of ill-discipline.

New Zealand-born Hartley has won 66 caps since his test debut in 2008 but his career has been plagued by bad behaviour, accumulating bans totalling 54 weeks for head-butting, biting, gouging, swearing at a referee, elbowing and punching.

The 29-year-old was dropped from England’s squad for last year’s Rugby World Cup after his latest indiscretion, then coach Stuart Lancaster saying he could “no longer be trusted” after being suspended for a head-butt in a club game.

But Australian Jones, who replaced Lancaster in November in the fallout from England’s World Cup failure, has offered Hartley a chance at redemption.

“He’s a guy, I think who can lead the side with the sort of attitude I want going forward. You know, we want to have an England side that’s got that uncompromising feel about it, and I’m really pleased that he’s taken up the job,” said Jones at a news conference at England’s training headquarters at Bagshot, near London.

Hartley will lead England in their first Six Nations championship game against Scotland at Murrayfield on February 6. England have not won the tournament since 2011 but start as favourites.

“As a team, it’s a huge challenge ahead, but not looking past Scotland for two weeks and we’ve got a good chance to get really excited about that, and tuck in. We haven’t had a field session yet – fortunately we’ve got to do all this for the admen, can’t wait to get my boots on and get out there with all the lads,” said Hartley.

“It’s easy to say I might not have had an international future, but as a bloke that as a player, you go away, and whenever I’ve had problems in the past, you make goals again, you reset your targets. I always said to myself, I’d get back into an England shirt, and here I am. So, I’ve still got to get through two weeks of training, get up to Murrayfield, but yes, I always had faith I’d be back here,” he added.

Australian Jones, named as England coach in November after Lancaster was fired, is optimistic that he can raise the level of the England team.

“The main thing I learned is that in a lot of cases, the limitations on the team is set by the people who coached them. That the players have the capacity to grow enormously, and when I look at the England team at the moment, they are the best players in England at the moment. There’s a lot of those players can be the best players in Europe. A lot of those players can potentially be the best players in the world, and our jobs as the coaching staff is to give them the opportunity to develop that, and that’s what we are going to do,” said Jones.
