Heavy rains in Havana leave two dead, property damage

Havana residents come out to assess the damage following Wednesday’s torrential downpours that triggered landslides.

Local media says at least two people were killed:

An 81-year-old woman who died after drowning in the floodwaters, and a 24-year-old man who was electrocuted when power lines fell.

Locals say it was the worst rain they’d ever seen.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) RESIDENT, MILVIA ESCALONA, SAYING:

“Fifteen or 20 years ago the water rose, but not as far as it does now. This has been historic. This had never, never, never happened before.”

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) RESIDENT, JUAN GERARDO DEL HOYO, SAYING:

“It’s awful. The television, the fridge — I lost everything — everything got wet, and nobody came to help.”

But they may not have seen the last of it.

Cuba’s Institute of Meteorology said more rain is expected over Cuba’s Western region Thursday — along with the arrival of a cold front.
