London gets kinky as Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein’s hit musical opens in the West End. Edward Baran reports.

Hit musical Kinky Boots opens in West End

It was curtain up for Kinky Boots in London on Tuesday night.

The Tony-award winning musical penned by Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein has already enjoyed huge success on Broadway.

It tells the story of a shoe factory in England which is turned around by a drag queen named Lola.

Its writers said it was poignant to bring the show home.

SOUNDBITE, COMPOSER AND LYRICIST OF ‘KINKY BOOTS’ / SINGER, CYNDI LAUPER AND BOOK WRITER OF ‘KINKY BOOTS’ / ACTOR, HARVEY FIERSTEIN SAYING (English):

Fierstein: “You know-you’re sitting in New York writing, writing a show that takes place in London and you’re imagining stuff and now here we are. We’ve brought the show home.”

Lauper: “It’s so great.”

Fierstein: “I made sure it would be welcome home.”

Lauper explained that the show, which has opened to largely positive reviews, is being well received in the British capital.

“Well the reaction we’ve been seeing is it makes a lot of people happy and you don’t know, I don’t know, all I do know is that people walk away really happy and exhilarated and that’s just great to be part of.”

The feelgood musical had the audience up on their feet, and received a standing ovation at the end of press night.
