Hollande and Putin to join forces over Islamic State

Russian President Vladimir Putin hosts his French counterpart, Francois Hollande, in Moscow.

Both countries are conducting air strikes in Syria and their leaders now call for world powers to unite against Islamic State — what Putin calls a common evil.

“You know our position, we are ready to work together this way. Moreover, we consider it necessary and in this sense our positions coincide.”

Hollande says the two countries need to find a common path to peace.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) FRENCH PRESIDENT, FRANCOIS HOLLANDE, SAYING:

“This is why I’m in Moscow with you to see how we can act together and coordinate so that we can strike this terrorist group, but also reach a solution for peace.”

Putin stressed that the Syrian army and President Bashar al-Assad are natural allies in the fight.

Hollande said he’s agreed with Putin that forces fighting Islamic State and other terrorist groups won’t be targeted.

And there are now signs of a growing unified front against IS — with Germany stepping in — now offering reconnaissance support to France as it targets IS in Syria.
