STORY: The city of Berlin received the trophies for the UEFA Champions League finals on Monday (April 27), with the German capital playing host on June 6.

German Football Federation (DFB) President Wolfgang Niersbach stepped in for UEFA president Michel Platini to hand over the coveted prizes after the Frenchman’s mother died at the weekend,

During an official ceremony at Berlin’s city hall, mayor Michael Mueller joked: “I don’t have to be all that neutral. Of course I support Bayern.”

His comments came after Bayern beat Hertha Berlin 1-0 on Saturday and holders Bayern Munich claimed their 25th German league title on Sunday without kicking a ball – the first of what they hope will be three trophies this season as they chase a repeat of their 2013 treble.

“I would be happy if the Germans played in the final,” Mueller said.

Niersbach, recently elected DFB President, praised the Bavarians for their German league title, telling reporters: “Heartfelt congratulations to Bayern Munich even if a lot of people think that this is a formality (winning the Bundesliga). It is not a formality to win so masterfully in a season with so many competitions in a faraway places.”
