Hundreds flee Burundi capital

Carrying as much as they can, Burundians are on the run.

They’re fleeing before a five-day ultimatum for residents to hand over illegal firearms expires.

President Pierre Nkurunziza set the November 7th deadline, saying anyone with guns risks being “dealt with as enemies of the nation.”

As a result, these residents of Bujumbura’s Matakura neighborhood fear what will come next.

“We are fleeing because we have heard about the president’s directive and I’m scared they are going to call us fighters.”

“This fear is caused by what the leadership said, we are very scared and worried because they might come down on us with all the military might. That is why people are running away.”

The country has been embroiled in chaos since Nkurunziza won a disputed election in July.

The bid plunged the country into crisis with deadly clashes between protesters and police… clashes that remain fresh in the minds of these Burundians as they flee.
