Hundreds flee fire north of Los Angeles

Thick columns of smoke rise above the hills north of Los Angeles, where the so-called Sand Fire has been burning for several days.

Officials have ordered residents of some 1,500 homes out of the path of the flames.

They say 100 commercial buildings are also threatened.

Hundreds have already fled. The fire has blackened some 20-thousand acres so far.

The body of one resident has reportedly been found in a burned car, but officials are still investigating the cause of death.

Firefighters are struggling against temperatures of more than 100 degrees, and rugged terrain as they try to bring the blaze under control.

They also point out that California is in the fifth year of an ongoing drought, leaving a lot of fuel for the flames.
