Hundreds of protesters attend Prague anti-Islam demonstration

Hundreds came to central Prague to protest against the barely controlled influx of migrants and refugees into Europe from Africa and the Middle East.

Among the speakers, Lutz Bachmann, leader of Germany’s far right group, Pegida.

“It is more important than anything else that the patriots in Europe connect and cooperate to fight this menace.”

For Bachmann and other right-wing protesters, the so-called menace threatens the very fabric of Europe.

“All what is happening now is about losing freedom. One European state after the other – we want to stop it.”

(SOUNDBITE) (Czech) DEMONSTRATOR, JIRI FANTA, SAYING:

“We want everything to work here as before, so that we can still live here like we do now..”

There have been similar protests elsewhere in Europe… while in Sweden — a destination for thousands of migrants — the anger has been expressed with violence.

Swedish police are investigating a series of arson attacks on immigrant asylum centers.

And last week, a sword-wielding man entered a Swedish school and killed a teaching assistant and a pupil. Two others were wounded. Police say he chose his victims by the color of their skin.

But still, the migrants come… apparently believing that an uncertain and possibly dangerous future cannot be any worse than then past they’ve left behind.
