A man in India stabbed 14 members of his own family to death, including seven children, before hanging himself, police said on Sunday. Nathan Frandino reports.
Indian man kills 14 family members, hangs himself
Police in India are investigating one of the country’s worst and grizzliest massacres in recent years.
(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) JOINT COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, ASHUTOSH K DUMRARE, SAYING:
“A local, Husnain Warerkar, residing here, killed 14 members of his family including parents, wife, children and three out of four sisters and later committed suicide. He killed others with a knife and hanged himself.”
The mass stabbing began shortly after midnight at the family’s home in Thane, north of Mumbai.
One of the accused’s sisters survived the attack.
She was taken a local hospital where she’s being treated for her injuries.
The uncle of the accused said he could not understand what had happened.
(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) UNCLE OF THE ACCUSED, MOHAMMAD ZAIN, SAYING:
“I cannot say anything because he was not like that nor was my brother (father of the accused). There was no work-related pressure. Only god knows what had happened to him.”
Police said they do not yet have a motive.
