“I think Mr Ceferin has said it as well, I mean, these are imagination and lies and the result speaks by itself. It’s an insult to the intelligence of the 55 associations who go and vote, convinced by a person, convinced by a programme. They voted freely, they voted in secret so…”

“It was a very convincing success. He has some very good ideas, he is a new face for many but he is a very competent person, he was president of a national association and I’m looking very much forward to work closely with him because I think it is also part of the new FIFA to be open and to work with the confederation rather than trying to find challenges and positions.”

STORY: FIFA president Gianni Infantino has dismissed on Friday (September 16) as “imagination and lies” any suggestion that he lobbied in favour of Aleksander Ceferin, who was elected head of European soccer’s governing body UEFA this week.

Ceferin, little-known outside his native Slovenia until three months ago, swept to a resounding win on Wednesday, picking up 42 of the 55 votes cast by UEFA’s member associations.

The other 13 went to his only rival, experienced Dutch football administrator Michael van Praag.

“I think Mr Ceferin has said it as well, I mean, these are imagination and lies and the result speaks by itself. It’s an insult to the intelligence of the 55 associations who go and vote, convinced by a person, convinced by a programme. They voted freely, they voted in secret so…”, Infantino told reporters.

Infantino, himself formerly UEFA’s general secretary, said voters had been looking for a new face.

“It was a very convincing success. He has some very good ideas, he is a new face for many but he is a very competent person, he was president of a national association and I’m looking very much forward to work closely with him because I think it is also part of the new FIFA to be open and to work with the confederation rather than trying to find challenges and positions”, FIFA president said.
