This navy footage captures the moment when four Iranian vessels made a so-called “high speed intercept” of a U.S. warship near the Strait of Hormuz.

A U.S. defense official says two of the Iranian vessels came within 300 yards of the USS Nitze.

The incident prompting concern at the White House that such actions could escalate tensions.

SOUNDBITE: WHITE HOUSE SPOKESMAN JOSH EARNEST, SAYING:

“At this point, it’s not clear what the intentions of the Iranian ships were, but the behavior is not acceptable given that this U.S. ship was in international waters.”

A U.S. defense official says the USS Nitze tried to communicate with the Iranian vessels 12 times, but received no response.

The U.S. warship was forced to change course to distance itself from the approaching vessels.

And in a separate incident, a U.S. Navy ship reportedly fired three warning shots after an Iranian fast-attack craft approached and circled two U.S. Navy ship and a Kuwaiti vessel in the northern Gulf.
