Iraqi Kurds tighten grip on oil-rich Kirkuk

The Kurdish Peshmerga forces are on the move in Iraq, and they’re making gains.

Officials there say they’re expanding their hold on the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, driving Islamic State militants farther away.

The forces began an offensive here, south of Kirkuk on Saturday, killing at least 35 insurgents while creating a 32 square mile buffer zone.

The Kurds took full control of the city last summer as the Sunni militant group overran the country’s north.

The peshmerga have emerged as a key partner for the United States in its campaign against Islamic State.

They have rolled IS back in northern Iraq, significantly expanding the formal boundary of their autonomous region in the process.
