STORY: : Security camera footage obtained by Turkish broadcaster Haberturk shows an alleged suicide bomber shooting down a plain clothed police officer in front of the elevators at Istanbul’s main airport.
The video shows two men exchanging a short dialogue, after the gunman caught the police officer’s attention for wearing a raincoat in summer, according to Haberturk.
Three bombers opened fire to create panic outside Istanbul airport on Tuesday (June 28), before two of them entered the building and blew themselves up. The third detonated his explosives at the entrance. Two hundred thirty-nine people were wounded.
The three men who carried out the airport attack that killed 43 people were of Russian, Uzbek and Kyrgyz nationality, a Turkish official said on Thursday (June 30).
Police detained 13 people, three of them foreigners, in raids across Istanbul in connection with Tuesday night’s gun and bomb attack on Europe’s third-busiest airport, the deadliest in a series of suicide bombings in Turkey this year.
It has also carried out repeated raids on suspected Islamic State safe houses in Turkey.
Nine suspected militants, thought to have been in contact with Islamic State members in Syria, were detained in dawn raids in four districts of the Aegean coastal city of Izmir on Thursday, the private Dogan news agency said.
It said they were accused of financing, recruiting and providing logistical support to the Sunni hardline group.
