An imam in Bergamo, Italy, gets a rude awakening when Italy’s anti-terrorism police branch arrested him on Friday.

Police searched the home of the imam, who is suspected of being the spiritual leader of an armed group linked to al Qaeda.

He was among 10 people arrested Friday. Police are still looking for eight others.

Cagliari Chief Prosecutor Maurio Mura says wire taps showed they were plotting attacks in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and at least at one point, the Vatican.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) CAGLIARI CHIEF PROSECUTOR, MAURO MURA, SAYING:

“There are conversations from which it emerges, clearly, that there is a plan of an attack which includes the possibility…a possible aim to target the Vatican”

Mura said there were indications of a plan for a suicide attack in a crowded place.

Italian officials have for years feared a possible attack by militants in St. Peter’s Square and have increased security there.

The suspects were all Pakistanis and Afghans.

Mura said the group had many weapons and numerous followers willing to carry out acts of terrorism.
