Italy quake death toll nears 250, rescue work intensifies

There’s an urgency now to rescue operations underway in central Italy‚Ķ (nats Julia!)

Like this one in Amatrice (AH-ma-CHREE-che), where a young girl was pulled out alive after spending more than 15 hours buried under rubble. (cheers)

But hope of finding more survivors diminishes by the hour.

Overnight, the death toll in Wednesday’s 6.2 magnitude quake rose sharply to nearly 250.

In Arquata Del Tronto, the sun rose Thursday to a harsh new reality for residents now sleeping in relief tents.

“I have lived through many earthquakes in the years, every seven to eight years there is an earthquake here. But one like this one, never, it was long and ugly.”

And officials warn the recovery phase, too, in Arquata Del Tronto might be ‘long and ugly’.

The once-picturesque hillside town — is essentially gone.

Officials think the death toll will continue to rise, surpassing Italy’s last bad quake, in 2009, which claimed 300 lives.

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has told the Italian people ‘tomorrow we can talk of reconstruction.’

But this, he says, ‘is a day for tears’.
