Kenyans welcome pope on first visit to Africa

The Pontiff’s first trip to Africa began with an exuberant welcome.

Hundreds of clergy, Kenyan government officials and others greeted Pope Francis at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.

The pope has said he wants to offer spiritual and material support to Africans and seek to heal divisions between Christians and Muslims.

The faithful say they are elated by his presence.

“He is one person who has shown humility to humanity and I think his visit also will help Kenyans to be humble and apart from helping Kenyans to be humble, I think it’s also an opportunity for the government to learn from him and continue with the war against corruption.”

The Pope’s Kenya stop will include Mass at the University of Nairobi on Thursday.

Amid heightened security, some 10,000 police have deployed in the capital for his visit.

After Kenya, the pontiff will travel to Uganda and Central African Republic, a country torn apart by Muslim-Christian violence…where supporters hope his message of peace will resonate.
