Kevin Spacey honoured at The Old Vic

He’s an actor lauded by many as one of the finest of his generation – a two-time Oscar winner and Hollywood A-lister.

But in Britain Kevin Spacey is known for more than just his movies.

Stars of stage and screen were out on Sunday to pay tribute to his tenure in charge at The Old Vic – one of London’s most revered theatres, but also one of its most troubled.

SOUNDBITE: Actor, Hugh Bonneville, saying (English):

“He is such an amazing stage, as well as screen, actor, but he’s really dug the roots of The Old Vic deeper than they were before. It was on shaky ground when Sally Greene set up the trust that took it over before Kevin’s tenure, and they’ve dug into the community.”

After taking up the mantle of artistic director in 2003, Spacey faced a raft of problems with the theatre, and with funding in particular.

Fundraising trips were taken up on both sides of the Atlantic.

Some saw it as too tall a task – but Spacey was single minded to see it through.

SOUNDBITE: Actor, Stephen Tompkinson, saying (English):

“The cynical people there thought “well maybe he’ll stay there for two years, and he certainly won’t fulfil this huge brag of doing ten years”, which of course he didn’t, he did 11 and a bit.”

Spacey was last week presented with a special award at London’s Olivier Awards, London’s premiere theatre celebration.

But inside The Old Vic’s halls, a quieter testament, among the pictures of past greats including Richard Burton and Laurence Olivier hanging on the walls.

Spacey’s own image there next is, many will say, rightly in its place.
