Kim will be no-show as Russia marks end of WWII

As Russia prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Kremlin is now reporting that North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un will not be attending the celebrations.

The trip would have been Kim’s first overseas since he took power in 2011 after the death of his father.

A Kremlin spokesman says that Kim has “decided to stay in Pyongyang.” He said that the “decision is related to (North) Korea’s internal affairs,” offering no further details.

About 30 foreign leaders will attend the anniversary events. But, many Western leaders are shunning the anniversary events in protest over Russia’s actions during the crisis in Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists are fighting Ukrainian government forces.
