Kurds call for end to Turkish offensive

Turkish tanks launch artillery on the southeastern city of Cizre (Jis-ray), part of a week-long offensive against Kurdish militias.

The government sent thousands of troops into the mainly Kurdish region last week, in an attempt to root out militants.

They say they’ve killed 127.

But the head of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party, Selhattin Demirtas, says they’ve killed at least 23 civilians.

“Is this bravery? Is this bravery, to attack to Cizre, Sirnak, Sur with tanks and artillery?”

And Cizre resident Halil Sen says people are tired of the fighting.

“We can’t raise our heads. There are tanks, artillery everywhere. Our children are afraid. We have no clothes, no food. Enough! We have been at war since the 1990s.”

A ceasefire between the government and Kurdish militias broke down last July, reviving a three-decade-long conflict that has claimed more than 40-thousand lives, and threatens to take even more.
