Labor unrest causes disruption across France

France’s air traffic controller strike is forcing major airlines to adapt. International flights are avoiding French airspace altogether.

The traffic controllers are striking against spending cuts for public services.

The stoppage coincides with other labor protests across France, union-led workers marching through several cities and calling for strikes across the public sector.

Even the Eiffel Tower is closed for business, which has some Parisians outraged.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) PARIS RESIDENT, STEPHANIE ASSAYAG, SAYING:

“I find it absolutely shameful that they’ve closed the Eiffel Tower, that they’re striking, I don’t know why, I think it’s a real shame, that they close the Louvre and whatever else. As a Parisian, I’m sickened, I’m sickened.”

The protesters say the spending cuts undermine public services.

But not all unions have joined the protests, so whether the strikers can gain enough traction to halt the cuts remains to be seen.
