A bubbling lava lake in Hawaii overflowed for the first time in over a century on Wednesday (April 29), drawing thousands of spectators eager for a closer at the geological phenomenon.

Geologists say that over the past 24 hours, the volatile lava lake on the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island, spilled over its sides into the Halmaumau crater three times.

The lava lake sits in a crater within a crater.

The lava level had been rising over the past week, causing thousands of visitors to flock to the volcano, hoping for a glimpse at the geological spectacle.
