1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) LIVERPOOL MANAGER BRENDAN RODGERS SAYING OF INJURED STRIKER DANIEL STURRIDGE:

“Well, it’s been difficult for Daniel of course. It’s – Daniel’s a good lad who obviously wants to play and he wants to be working and helping the team, but it’s just been one of those seasons for him where it has been very unfortunate and he just missed out. So we are just going to have to monitor that day by day and see where he’s at. But as I said he’s, when he’s been fit he’s been brilliant for the team. So it’s just key now to see if we can get him back fit and consistently playing. But we will see if that is going to be this season or the pre-season”

“No it’s not tempting. It’s just he’s not available. But we’ll do what’s in the best interests of him. You know, we’ll have to protect Daniel, make sure he’s going to be here over the next numbers of years playing and playing to the level that we all know he can”

STORY: Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge’s frustrating season looks like ending prematurely, his manager Brendan Rodgers said on Monday (April 27).

The 25-year-old England forward has been sidelined by hip and thigh injuries and has not played since the FA Cup quarter-final win over Blackburn three weeks ago.

Rodgers told a news conference ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League match at Hull City on Tuesday: “Well, it’s been difficult for Daniel of course. But we will see if that is going to be this season or the pre-season.”

Asked if he was tempted to leave Sturridge out to try to ensure he is fit for next season, Rodgers replied: “No it’s not tempting. It’s just he’s not available. But we’ll do what’s in the best interests of him. You know, we’ll have to protect Daniel, make sure he’s going to be here over the next numbers of years playing and playing to the level that we all know he can.”

Sturridge started the first three games of the season, scoring the winner in the 2-1 victory over Southampton on the opening day, but did not play from the end of August until late January.

He has only played 18 games in this campaign, scoring five goals, compared to 33 appearances last season and 24 goals.

Liverpool are still chasing a top-four finish and a place in next season’s Champions League. With five Premier League games remaining they are seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.
