London council cracks down on wealthy drivers showing off their supercars

STORY:

Given London traffic, many would question the point of owning a car that does 200 MPH.

But, for many owners of supercars, it’s as much about just being seen and heard as testing their mettle as drivers.

And, residents of the posh Knightsbridge district like Panda Morgan Thomas are being driven to distraction by the revving and racing of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Bugattis.

“It’s not so bad during the day although I do know that some of the elderly residents find it very difficult but the real problem for us is at night when they race up and down Sloane Street, amongst other places, revving their cars at high speed and making really horrific noise and it’s quite impossible to sleep.”

The problem has the local council getting in gear.

It’s proposed a special order on the streets around Harrods department store that would put the brakes on showboating, like revving of engines, speeding, driving in convoys, or blasting music.

Many of the cars are owned by Arabs who ship them in, though there are locals with exotic wheels too.

25-year-old engineer Ali Asad from Kuwait, owner of this KTM XBOW, says a few lead foots are making everyone else look bad.

“Whenever you’re in a country that’s not yours you gotta respect the rules in the end, so drive carefully, respect the people who live here.”

Iraqi kick boxing champion Riyadh al-Azzawi and his $400,000 golden Ferrari are well-known on the streets around Harrods.

He says the hot-rodding bothers him too, and welcomes the regulatory speed bump.

“At least we can stop these people from doing all of that because that ruins people’s image. People come to drive because we enjoy, we love cars, to drive around, people taking pictures – it’s something nice, you know.”

The council’s order is on track to be introduced in September, subject to public consultation.
