Hundreds of people filled the streets of Saptari as they carried the bodies of the four protesters in a procession. According to local reports, three protesters were killed in violent clashes with security forces when they were obstructing a highway. Another died of an electric shock during the clash. Madhesi leader, Rajendra Mahato, said the people were now gearing for the final battle. Several rounds of negotiations between the government and protest leaders have failed amid differences over how to change the internal boundaries of newly created federal states. Protesters say the entire southern plain region must not be split into more than two provinces. They now form part of six of the seven provinces dominated by hill dwellers. In Janakpur, scores of students took part in a silent protest condemning the deaths and police repression. Nepalese Cable TV operators have also blocked all Indian channels “indefinitely” in protest against an unofficial “blockade of goods” into the country.
