Malaysian rapper released on bail

Malaysian rapper Namewee has been released on bail after being held in police custody for four days.

The 33-year-old found himself in legal trouble this week over a music video he produced which was titled “Oh my God!”.

Police detained him on Sunday following a complaint that the video allegedly insulted Islam.

On Thursday, Namewee – whose real name is Wee Meng Chee – was released in Penang on the order of a magistrate’s court.

District police say they’re now awaiting instructions from the country’s attorney-general on whether to press charges against the rapper or drop the case.

In Malaysia, “insulting or ridiculing” any religion is a criminal offense.
