Marchers in Central African Republic demand new vote

Demonstrators in the Central African Republic are calling for new elections, saying last month’s vote was tainted by fraud. Diane Hodges reports.

Marchers in Central African Republic demand new vote

Demonstrators, marching through the streets of Bangui, are demanding that the results of last month’s presidential election in Central African republic, be thrown out.

A court has already canceled the result of a parallel legislative election, after allegations of fraud.

But leaders with the opposition Alliance of Democratic Forces say both votes should be thrown out.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) YOUTH LEADER FOR MOVEMENT OF LIBERATION OF CENTRAL AFRICAN PEOPLE PARTY, EDGARD GREMBOUI, SAYING:

“The legislative elections were canceled due to irregularities. We ask the same for the presidential elections that are racking up countless irregularities.”

The protesters gathered outside the office of the U.N. peacekeeping mission, demanding international help in resolving the electoral dispute, aid that may be continue to be needed if the elections are unable to resolve the country’s sectarian conflict and political instability.
