Mexican drama scoops top prize at Beijing Film Festival.

Mexican director Bernardo Arellano scooped the Best Film at the Beijing Film Festival on Thursday for his drama ‘Comienzo del Tiempo’, about an elderly couple fallen on hard times.

Kung fu movie star Jackie Chan presented the award at the glitzy closing ceremony in the Chinese capital.

France’s Jean-Jacques Annaud won best director for his film ‘Wolf Totem’, which is about a Chinese student sent to live with nomadic herdsmen in inner Mongolia.

French director Luc Besson led the festival’s prize-giving jury.

Other members of the panel included Russian director Fedor Bondarchuk, Hong Kong director Peter Chan and American screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen.

China’s box office revenues grew 34 per cent last year, cementing its position as the second biggest box office territory after the United States and Canada.
