Fans of Mexican singer Juan Gabriel, a musical icon across Latin America for more than 40 years, mourn his passing. Natasha Howitt reports.

Mexican singer Juan Gabriel dies of heart attack

The Latin American musical icon Juan Gabriel died of a heart attack at the age of 66.

He was due to sing at a concert in El Paso, Texas late on Sunday.

Broadcaster Televisa says he died earlier in Santa Monica.

The Mexican songwriter and performer entertained generations of Latin Americans with powerful love ballads and glittering outfits.

Fans gather here in Mexico City around a statue of him, known as the Divo of Juarez.

Juarez is the name of the border town where he spent much of his younger life.

“It truly is a sad loss for the Mexican people”, this fan says.

The Latin American community in the U.S. also gathered to mourn his passing.

One fan who had attended his last concert said he had looked a little sick, and kept stopping to take a breath.

Still, “I never thought this would happen”, she said.

Born in 1950 to a poor family in Mexico, Gabriel rose to sell millions of copies of his albums.

He has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
