Missouri Governor Jay Nixon says 12 of the 13 known deaths in Missouri following severe floods were “preventable.” Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

Missouri Governor: 13 killed in flooding

A deadly rare winter flood swamps Missouri — threatening hundreds of homes and claiming the lives of more than a dozen people.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon says many of those deaths were preventable.

(SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH)MISSOURI GOVERNOR JAY NIXON , SAYING:

“We have had 12 preventable deaths here already, 12 of the thirteen deaths happened when folks drove into water.”

Residents are struggling through a fourth straight day of storms, fighting floodwaters that have closed highways and even part of the Mississippi River.

A week of chaotic weather continued throughout the United States as a storm system that created deadly tornadoes in the Midwest and Southwest pushed north. More than 40 people have died of weather-related causes in the past week.
