Missouri Governor: 13 killed in flooding

A deadly rare winter flood swamps Missouri — threatening hundreds of homes and claiming the lives of more than a dozen people.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon says many of those deaths were preventable.

“We have had 12 preventable deaths here already, 12 of the thirteen deaths happened when folks drove into water.”

Residents are struggling through a fourth straight day of storms, fighting floodwaters that have closed highways and even part of the Mississippi River.

A week of chaotic weather continued throughout the United States as a storm system that created deadly tornadoes in the Midwest and Southwest pushed north. More than 40 people have died of weather-related causes in the past week.
