Mixed reactions to Jamia Milia’s minority status

Sharing is Caring

New Delhi, 16 Jan (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Kamal Farooqui on Saturday condemned the central government for filing of an affidavit against Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) University’s minority status. Farooqui said the Indian Constitution provides fundamental rights to minorities to establish their educational institutions. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi countered by saying that the Government doesn’t interfere in the activities of minority educational institutions. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Siddharth Nath Singh said that Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi’s statement over the minority status of JMI was absolutely right. Earlier, Rohatgi had said that Jamia Milia Islamia was not a minority institution as it was created by an Act of Parliament.
