An Egyptian judge hands down a 20-year sentence to former President Mohamed Mursi.

Mursi, who rose through the ranks of the Muslim Brotherhood before winning the presidency in 2012, faced charges of violence, kidnapping and torture stemming from the killing of protesters during demonstrations in 2012.

While the White House has raised concerns about the verdict — in a Cairo Cafe — words of support .

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) LAWYER, SALAH SOLIMAN, SAYING:

“This verdict is an example to all groups that do not answer the demands of the people. It is an example to every leader who does not answer the will of his people and does not take the path of the constitution and rule of law.”

Amnesty International describes the ruling as “a travesty of justice.” But in this cafe the only people willing to speak on camera supported the verdict.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) CAFE WORKER, MAHMOUD OSMAN, SAYING:

“The ruling is one hundred percent good and fair. Projects are starting to be built in Egypt and we are moving forward.”

The ruling is the first against Mursi, who has said he is determined to reverse what he calls a military coup in 2013 staged by then army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi — Now Egypt’s President.
