Mideast conflict not about settlements: Netanyahu United Nations (United States) – 22 September 2016 13:21 – AFP – LEAD Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the UN General Assembly on Thursday that his country’s conflict with the Palestinians had “never” been about Jewish settlements.”This remains the true core of the conflict: the persistent Palestinian refusal to recognize the Jewish state in any boundary,” he said, directly contradicting Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas.”This conflict has never been about the settlements or about establishing a Palestinian state,” Netanyahu told the United Nations.”It’s always been about the existence of a Jewish state, a Jewish state in any boundary,” he added. An hour earlier, Abbas told the General Assembly that Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank was destroying “whatever possibility is left for a two-state solution.”But Netanyahu said that Haifa, Jaffa and Tel Aviv, all cities in Israel, were “the real settlements they are after.”The issue of settlements in the West Bank was nonetheless “real,” he conceded, saying that it “can and must be resolved in final negotiations, final-status negotiations.”jm/cml/vs
