“Portugal are the European champions and will be until 2020, at the final stage of the European Championships, so until then we will always be the champions and then and only then will Portugal have the responsibility to defend the title. We now have a World Cup to qualify for and what we will try to do is reach the first position of the group as soon as possible, knowing the difficulties ahead due to the teams we have to face at this qualification and the next game against Switzerland is the first one, so we need to be focused on that and not worried with anything else, we believe in our capacities and value.”

STORY: European champions Portugal trained on Wednesday (August 31) ahead of their first game since they claimed the Euro 2016 title.

The Portuguese take on Gibraltar in a friendly on Thursday (September 1) as they prepare for their opening World Cup qualifier in Switzerland next Tuesday (September 6).

Portugal coach Fernando Santos brushed off concerns that his side would face extra pressure as European champions.

“Portugal are the European champions and will be until 2020, at the final stage of the European Championships, so until then we will always be the champions and then and only then will Portugal have the responsibility to defend the title. We now have a World Cup to qualify for and what we will try to do is reach the first position of the group as soon as possible, knowing the difficulties ahead due to the teams we have to face at this qualification and the next game against Switzerland is the first one, so we need to be focused on that and not worried with anything else, we believe in our capacities and value,” Santos told reporters in Lisbon.

Portugal will have to compete without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo and Renato Sanches. Ronaldo is still recovering from the knee injury which forced him to limp out of the Euro 2016 final against France in the first half.
