No one can be prosecuted on ground of adultery labeling it as criminal offence: Petitioner’s lawyer

Sharing is Caring

New Delhi, Sep 27 (ANI): While addressing the media after Supreme Court’s decision on Section 497 (adultery) of Indian Panel Code (IPC), Kaleeswaram Raj, petitioner’s lawyer said, “Supreme Court today in the historical judgment has got away with both these provisions namely Section 497 of IPC and Section 198(2) of CrPC. No one can be prosecuted on the ground of adultery labeling it as a criminal offence. Court has said that section 497 of Indian Penal Code is quite archaic and colonial. This cannot stand test of time or constitutional principles as this discriminates against women and takes women as mere property of the husband”.
