Action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger pumps up his tender side and sheds a few tears as a farmer struggling to care for his dying daughter in “Maggie,” an unconventional zombie film.

The drama, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, spins a different take on the zombie genre, concentrating more on the father-daughter relationship than blood-soaked gore and cannibalism.

It also provides Schwarzenegger, a former bodybuilder and governor of California, a new acting challenge.

“Well it’s a departure only because it’s a much more dramatic role. Usually when you do action movies there is not that much room for huge dramatic moments because it’s more about the action and about wiping out the enemy and all that. Where as in this movie you play this strong guy, but whatever is going on in your family becomes much more powerful.”

British actress Joely Richardson plays Schwarzenegger wife in the film.

“I think people will be surprised at the Arnold Schwarzenegger in ‘Maggie.’ I haven’t seen it so I am also waiting to be surprised. But working with him it was very much a different – first of all he had never done an independent film. There were no big trailers, there were no – there is no time between shots. That’s the biggest thing, it was kind of impromptu.”

In the debut feature film by British director Henry Hobson, Schwarzenegger is Wade, a farmer in a small town hit by a global outbreak of a deadly disease that turns its victims into zombies and threatens to wipe out humanity.

Hobson says “Maggie” is the perfect festival film.

SOUNDBITE: Henry Hobson, director, saying (English):

“It’s an independent, small. It’s about showing a genre in a completely new light. A zombie genre has been seen, we’ve seen every different type of film. So this is about showing it in a new light. And I think a festival plays to that experimental way of seeing and working with film.”

And Schwarzenegger fans don’t worry, the actor says he won’t be giving up action films completely – his focus now is simple.

SOUNDBITE: Arnold Schwarzenegger, actor, saying (English):

“To do as many movies as possible and to do good movies, to find good scripts, good directors. And to find dramatic pieces, action pieces, futuristic pieces. Conan the Barbarian. I mean, whatever comes up that is really good and interesting. So I enjoy being back in the movie business.”

“Maggie” will be released in the U.S. on May 8.
