More than one thousand migrants were rescued by a Norwegian ship on Monday (August 29) and taken to a port in Italy.

According to the Norwegian National Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS), which heads the Norwegian contribution to the European Union’s border agency Frontex’ operations in the Mediterranean, the people were rescued around 20 nautical miles from Libya’s coast, and the coastal town of Zuwara.

Zuwara, Libya’s most western town located near the Tunisian border, is a major launchpad for smugglers shipping migrants to Italy.

According to NCIS, most of the rescued were from West and sub-Saharan Africa but also from Bangladesh.

The migrants were brought onboard the rescue vessel Siem Pilot and will be taken to the Italian port of Corigliano Calabro.
