Nuremberg opens its traditional Christmas market

It’s not the holiday season in Germany until the Christkindlmarket in Nuremberg gets underway.

The annual Christmas market — one of the most famous in the world — marks the official start of the holiday here.

Thousands of visitors find all sorts of traditional German gifts in the town square …. wooden toys, sweets and cakes, and of course, sausage and beer.

“It’s the start of the festive season. You are together with your family, looking forward to Christmas celebrations. The highlight is to be together.”

But this year, there’s an added element — increased police presence in the wake of the deadly Paris attacks.

The city’s police spokesperson says there’s no concrete threat of an attack on Germany but a high “abstract” threat that Islamist perpetrators could act.

Still, even that isn’t deterring these visitors.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CHRISTMAS MARKET VISITOR FROM UNITED STATES, JOHN KOCINA, SAYING:

“Not worried at all. We are from the United States and we came over yesterday and we think it’s very safe here, Germany is a very safe country, so we don’t have any problems.”

The market’s history goes all the way back to 1628 and traditionally wraps up each year on Christmas Eve.
