“I am very happy with everything that is happening. I very much want to play. I want the first (MLS home) game to happen. It’s going to be a historical game and I hope that we can work very well and win the game.”

“David’s been fantastic, what’s important to me is his work rate and his mentality. His work rate has been second to none and his mentality with the group as a leader and his willingness to work with the younger players and to try to improve everything around him, these things have all been fantastic. One game in, I would say it probably wasn’t his best game, and we know he has a lot more to offer, but I also know that from prior years past that it takes time for every international player that comes to this league, it takes time to adjust.”

STORY: The curtain goes up for the newest big-time sports show in town, with Spanish captain David Villa leading the New York City FC in their first Major League Soccer home game at iconic Yankee Stadium on Sunday.

Villa, a World Cup winner, European Championship winner, a Champions League and Spanish league winner, has embraced the challenge of leading a brand new team and winning hearts in New York starting at home against the New England Revolution.

“I am very happy with everything that is happening,” Villa, 33, said on Friday (March 13), at the club’s training session on a field at State University of New York at Purchase.

“I very much want to play. I want the first (MLS home) game to happen. It’s going to be a historical game and I hope that we can work very well and win the game,” Villa added.

NYCFC, which is sharing Yankee Stadium with the pinstriped baseball players this season while they wait for their own home stadium to be built, were launched last week in a 1-1 draw in their MLS debut against Orlando in front of a crowd of 62,000.

Coach Jason Kreis said he was happy with Villa’s skills despite his performance in last week’s game.

“David’s been fantastic, what’s important to me is his work rate and his mentality,” he said.

“His work rate has been second to none and his mentality with the group as a leader and his willingness to work with the younger players and to try to improve everything around him, these things have all been fantastic.
