6. WOMEN’S RACE, EVA SAMKOVA WINS FRM MICHELA MOIOLI AND CHLOE TRESPEUCH
STORY: Olympic medallists Nikolay Olyunin and Eva Samkova won the first ever snowboard cross sprint event in Feldberg, Germany on Saturday (January 23).
One of the winter Olympics’ most popular events, snowboard cross is full of thrills and spills but this version is much shorter.
In front of a crowd of more than 3,000 spectators, which marked the Black Forest venue’s debut as World Cup host, Samkova and Olyunin supplied evidence that the new format run on a shorter but still high-quality course could be a future alternative for the World Cup calendar.
Russia’s Olyunin – who now leads the World Cup standings – beat Olympic champion Paul Vaultier of France, with Australia’s Alex Pullin third.
Meanwhile Sochi winner Samkova, from the Czech Republic, shook off illness to power past Michela Moioli (Italy) and Chloe Trespeuch (France).
There will be a second round of races on Sunday.
“Olympic championships I second, Olympic games in Sochi. I want winner, today winner for me,” Olyunin said after his win. “Tomorrow competition I want replay.”
