The FBI says the leader of an armed occupation at a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon was arrested Tuesday after a confrontation during a traffic stop.

According to the FBI, shots were fired during the stop on a highway in northeast Oregon. One person was killed.

The hospital in Burns, Oregon was on lockdown and a state department of transportation dispatcher said a 25 mile stretch of Highway 395 where the incident happened was closed.

Occupation leader Ammon Bundy and four others were arrested after the traffic confrontation, and two other people were arrested in two other locations.

The protesters had been occupying the remote Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon since early January in a dispute over the use of federal land.
