Over 900 feared dead in Mediterranean migrant boat tragedy
New Delhi, April 20 (ANI): More than 900 migrants are feared dead after an overcrowded boat capsized 70 miles from the Libyan coast, the worst maritime disaster in the Mediterranean sea. According to Italy’s coastguard, only 28 people have survived the wreck and 24 bodies have been recovered from the waters around the accident site, about 60 miles (about 96 km) off the Libyan coast. A survivor’s testimonies suggested there were about 950 people, far more than the initially estimated 700, on board the 20-meter fishing boat. The victims included at least 200 women and some 50 children. Aid groups are calling for the restoration of an Italian navy search-and-rescue operation named Mare Nostrum, which was suspended late last year due to a lack of European funding.
