Palestinians demand return of bodies

ROUGH CUT – NO REPORTER NARRATION

Israeli security officers dispersed a crowd of protesters on Saturday (December 26) demonstrating near Jerusalem’s Old City walls to demand the return of the bodies of Palestinian people killed during the recent wave of violence.

Protesters had created a human chain near the wall holding pictures of the Palestinians whose bodies were being held by Israel.

The group of demonstrators chanted, waved Palestinian flags and held signs asking for the return of the bodies.

In November, Israel’s defence minister said Israel is refusing to return the bodies of Palestinians unless the Palestinian side agrees to keep their funerals “modest.”

Israel, in the past has kept the bodies of slain militants as a punitive measure or to trade for the remains of its soldiers.

A sign held by an elderly protester, whose son was killed in an attack, read ‘I want my son’s body back. I want to hug him. I want to keep him warm.’

In the past 12 weeks, Israeli forces or armed civilians have killed at least 126 Palestinians, 77 of whom authorities described as assailants.

Most others have been killed in clashes with security forces.

Palestinians have killed 20 Israelis and a U.S. citizen in the same period, raising fears of a wider escalation, a decade after the last Palestinian uprising subsided.

During the protest, which Israeli security officers say were being held without permit, stun grenades were used to disperse the crowd.
