“He made a joke with me. He said ‘listen, I gonna make you famous all over the world’. (LAUGHS) He get the ball and he say ‘you know this?’. I say ‘of course I know this’. He say ‘OK I gonna make one picture, one painting of you with your friend, the ball’. That was the first time when I met him. But I really was, you know, surprised by that”

“It’s difficult to be, to say if he will be between those two players because Messi, for example, almost 12 years, 10 years, he is the same level and Ronaldo is same. Maybe he (Hazard) come in the same spot, but it’s difficult to say if he is the third one, it’s difficult. But he is an excellent player, no doubt”

“It was really a disaster. This is something who nobody can, you know, predict. Brazil could lose one-nil, two-nil, but seven, to take seven goals. And also the second game, we lost 3-1 (sic), this is something who – only God can explain what happened”

STORY: Brazilian soccer legend Pele was in London on Thursday (April 23) to publicise a forthcoming exhibition celebrating his 75 years of sporting and humanitarian achievements.

The exhibition entitled ‘Pele Art, Life, Football’ is due to open on September 26 and close just after his 75th birthday on October 23.

It will include paintings, prints and sculptures from a variety of international artists, but the highlight for many people will be Andy Warhol’s 1977 acrylic and silkscreen ink on canvas portrait showing Pele in his final year with New York Cosmos alongside a football. The portrait is valued at around 10 million U.S. dollars.

Pele, real name Edson Arantes do Nascimento, said on Thursday Warhol joked that the portrait would make the triple world cup winner famous.

As he was in London, Pele was asked to compare Eden Hazard of Premier League leaders Chelsea to top world players Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid. The Brazilian said the older Messi and Ronaldo had been playing longer at the top level so it was difficult to say yet whether Hazard was as good, but added “he is an excellent player, no doubt”.

Brazil hosted last year’s world cup but had a poor tournament, losing 7-1 to eventual winners Germany in the semi-finals, then 3-0 to Netherlands in the third place play-off.

Pele acknowledged that was a “disaster” and said only God could explain what went wrong.
