Varanasi, Oct 29 (ANI): People at holy town of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh remembered the fallen heroes of Indian Army by releasing lit lanterns to sky. Serving and retired personnel of defence and paramilitary forces also participated in the month-long ritual. Brigadier of 39 Gorkha Training Centre in Varanasi, Anil Malhotra expressed his gratitude to people from all walks of life for participating in this noble cause. Commissioner of Varasnasi, Nitin Ramesh Gokarn also participated in the ritual and lit lanterns. The lanterns were lit to honour fallen heroes who laid down their lives in the service of motherland since independence in 1947. The ritual dates back to the ancient rimes, when it was observed to honour the sacrifices of the dead soldiers in the epic Mahabharata war.
