Police arrest dozens in NYC protest

Over 60 people in New York City are arrested during protests against police violence and racial profiling.

A 25-year-old African-American died after he was injured while in Baltimore police custody, triggering demonstrations across several cities.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) PROTESTER FAITH LAUGIER [PRONOUNCED LU-GEE-AY] SAYING:

“The police are not there to protect the people. They are there to protect, they are worrying about property. Windows can be replaced, this guy’s spine, his life can’t be. He is gone.”

In Baltimore, Freddie Gray’s death sparked the country’s worst riots in decades but they’ve since died down.

About 3,000 troops and police have moved in to enforce a curfew in the city.

Many residents were out on the streets in peaceful protest before the 10 p.m. cut-off time.

Police are due to give their findings on Gray’s death to prosecutors, but said no information will be made public.
