Police promise vigilance as Obama weighs in on Baltimore violence

Sharing is Caring

Baltimore: The fires may be out, but tensions on the streets of Baltimore are still running high. During the afternoon, protesters and police faced off at the intersection where a CVS was looted and burned yesterday. But police were insistent, they would do everything possible to prevent a recurrence of Monday’ night’s violence.

And President Obama, hosting his Japanese counterpart at the White House, was forced once again to address the issue of racial violence in the US.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, SAYING:

“The violence that happened yesterday distracted from the fact that you had seen multiple days of peaceful protests that were focused on entirely legitimate concerns of these communities in Baltimore.”

Obama says police departments should look at themselves and how they interact with the public.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, SAYING:

“I think there are police departments that have to do some soul searching. I think there’s some communities that need to do some soul searching. But I think we as a country need to do some soul searching.”

As officials across the country struggle to deal with, what many are now calling a national crisis, police in Baltimore have a more immediate problem…keeping the streets safe after a night of unprecedented violence.
